Hated, hated Jack for most of this book. What an obnoxious, controlling man whore!! By the end of the book I liked him more but he is still an idiot. Breaking promises after promises............ugh. Kate was the brains and the glue in this romance. I hated seeing her in pain and often wished she would have kicked Jack to the curb. How horrible to literally not be able to go to town without running into a woman that the man whore slept with!! Was there any woman he didn't sleep with? I guess I missed that page if so.

Best part of the book was without a doubt Black Thunder.

I thought this was very entertaining. I got this as a freebie, and it's one of those gems I would have gladly paid for. The story surprised me in a couple of ways. When I think back on it, the character's personalities should have been a turn off for me. If you have ever seen any of my other reviews, you will notice that I love possessive alpha males. But I would consider Jack more of an overbearing, controlling, alpha male. Well Kate, she cries--a lot. Normally these traits would bother me, but he does it with a kind of boyish innocence (like"what did I do?") that I found endearing, and hers just goes with her character, but somehow doesn't make her seem weak. It all comes together well. I bought the writing style was good, with believable dialogue, steamy, well written sex scenes, and an easy flow to the read. The only issue I really had was sometimes pov switches to secondary characters just for a line or paragraph. It was slightly confusing in those parts. It has a HFN, with a trailer of the next book involving same couple. It does not end in a cliffhanger, and their story could stop there. Normally, I would not continue with the series--I like my characters to have their HEA in one book--but I really enjoyed this couple, and I think I will find out what happens next with Jack and Kate.
What draw me to this book was "the opposite attract" topic. A rugged cowboy living in a kind of city you see in western movies and a teacher from a sunny California city. What do they have in common? I wanted to find out.
Anyway there's more that meets the eye.
Jack can be an overbearing, controlling, jealous and possessive man but these traits are soothed by his being insanely in love with Kate. He acts this way not only because he is like he is, but because it's the only way he knows of showing the love he feels to his woman. A caveman yes, but with reasons...sometimes.
He's able of the most tender gestures one minute and the most jerky actions the next. I should intensely dislike one who behaves like him but I can't find in me the strength and will to do so.

I think he wants to do the best things but he comes to realize them in the worst misunderstood and misconstrued ways, not helped in this by the constant unfavorable advices and opinions anyone feels obliged to give Kate.

Kate moved to Virginia City for a new start.
What she didn't expect to meet and need and fall for is Jack McBride.
Kate doesn't like or approve Jack's ways but still she can't help falling and falling bad. But this doesn't mean she lets him control and dominate her all the time, absolutely not. She fights to make her points and even if it seems Jack wins most times, actually to win he caves in and Kate wins by making Jack believes she caved. Appearances are saved but everyone wins in the end.

Another thing I loved about this book is the mystical bond Kate formed with Black Thunder. I don't know why Kate was the one able to "tame" this wild horse but I find the scenes with them moving.

Now I want to see how Jack will deal with Kate's mother in "The Price".
I love protective, jealous & possessive alpha heroes and this one was to the extreme. While he did not cheat per se because he was not in a relationship with the heroine his unwillingness to keep it in his pants after meeting and lusting after her was very disappointing. That was the reason that this was not a 5 star review. It served no purpose of him smexing a woman the evening that he met and desired the heroine. He has sexual dreams about the heroine while in the OW bed. It was a turn off to me and the author could have easily left it out. I wish she would have.

Any hoo, the story kept my interest. I read it without taking a break. Loved reading about the hero falling hard and changing from a jackjerk to a mature and loving man. The ending was a HFN which was fine because it is a series. While I liked this book I am not reading the next one because it is the same couple. I have seen too many HFN endings get mucked up when a couple's story is stretched over multiple books.
