On May 24, 2015, Tanith Lee died after a long illness. NPR said she had undergone treatment for breast cancer twice. She was 67. She was also a prolific writer with about 90 novels, hundreds of short stories and film and television work. I'd seen her name on books in the fantasy section over the years but never purchased one. My plan back then was to read an entire selection by one author and move on. The obsessive behavior strikes again. So after hearing about Lee's departure from the real world, I looked her up. This blog post I read said "The Silver Metal Lover" changed the post author's life. So, since I consume most of my books electronically, I looked up her books on Amazon. I read the summaries. Bunch of horror stuff. Ugh. No Silver Metal. But there was "Metallic Love" the sequel. I like to start at the beginning. My obsession thing. Collect them all. Like I had to have all the Fantastic Four comics (still working on that.) But it appeared as if this was OK to consume without reading the original. Indeed, I was correct. Lee has a superb writing style. It's as if she's just jotting notes. Each word is succinct. Nothing is waste. Her pacing is like Bradbury or Asimov or Burroughs (either one). There's little pondering. What does happen is quite a bit of self reflection. But it's sturdy stuff. The story is about Loren, a street urchin who gets by living with a religious cult. Her mother gave her up when she was young. Loren is tough. She has to be to survive. At 12, she finds a book, the story written by Jane of her love affair with a robot, one who was more human and perfect than any other human. Loren is transfixed. She is so captivated and empowered, she leaves the cult and forges out on her own. As she grows older in this future society of haves and super-poor have nots, she still thinks of Jane and the robot Silver. She eventually tries to find out more of them. Who they were and where they are now. And then they find her. There are twists and turns. Lee is a masterful yarn spinner. I won't say what happens but I will say it's a love story. Totally unconventional.Tags : Metallic Love (Silver Metal Lover) [Tanith Lee] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. <b>In her now-classic tale The Silver Metal Lover</i>, award-winning author Tanith Lee told the spellbinding story of Jane and her forbidden love for a robot named Silver. Metallic Love Silver Metal Lover Tanith Lee 9780553584714 Books Reviews
Yes, I know Tanith Lee is super-famous and has won all sorts of fancy literature awards, but I'm still not afraid to say that this story has serious flaws.
I suppose the intent is entirely for romance, but the irresponsible behavior of the humans is extremely difficult to accept.
As foolish as it was in the first place to ever create such superpowered, indestructible robots in the first place, with all these incredibly dangerous abilities - no one even tried to reign them in. They knew the robots were killers, and they just covered it up and let them skate away scott-free. Any sane human being would sooner spritz the city with aerosolized Ebola than let these killing machines ever escape the lab.
I just can't accept that any professional organization would be so irresponsible as to allow the major events in this story to progress. Oh, and the proofreading was NOT perfect, despite the book's lofty origin and authorship.
This book is a companion to Tanith Lee's Silver Metal Lover, and I serendipitously ended up reading this book first. There is enough exposition from the narrator (I loved her) that you don't really need to read the first "installment". Without spoiling much, it is what the cover says. It's about Metallic Love. Our narrator doesn't have too much trouble falling in love with Verlis (our truly lovable robotic protagonist/lover) but she does have difficulty around the circumstances of his "birth". It was a really great, absorbing read and I devoured it. The little "twists" at the end really gave me chills and I loved every moment of this book. Would recommend for lovers of romance (not seedy, but very enjoyable) and scifi (the descriptions of the capabilities of technology were both fantastic and convincing) alike.
Taken on its own terms, Metallic Love is not a bad book. The second book in the S.I.L.V.E.R. series, Metallic Love is a well-executed vision of a dystopian future and a society where rebellion is brewing, as a result of the events of the first book. Tanith Lee is a brilliant writer, and many of her books have been favorites of mine for decades.
Which, paradoxically, is the problem, here. Metallic Love is a sequel to The Silver Metal Lover, one of Lee's most beloved science fiction/fantasy novels, and certainly one of my favorite of her books. The first book, published in 1981, recounts the star-crossed love story of sixteen-year-old Jane, the emotionally abused daughter of a wealthy, negligent mother and Silver, the robot musician with whom Jane falls in love. Jane's love gradually humanizes Silver, and though he is destroyed at the end of the book, the reader is given reason to believe that his soul has survived, and that he and Jane can look forward to a reunion in some distant future afterlife or reincarnation. Or both.
Then, twenty-four years later, Metallic Love comes along and gives us a rebooted Silver, now known as Verlis, who has no connection to Jane, but takes up with the narrative of the second book, Loren. Honestly, if you loved the love story of Jane and Silver, this can't be anything but a kick in the gut. And, if you've been a fan of the first book since its initial publication over thirty years ago, your disappointment is going to be that much greater. That is why I wish I'd never read Metallic Love. Not because it is, in and of itself a bad book. It isn't. I wish I'd never read it because I was happy with the bittersweet, hopeful ending of The Silver Metal Lover and Metallic Love seems to negate that.
Lee has said there may be a third book, which will take up the story of Jane and Silver. As long as the third novel doesn't trash their relationship the way this one, did, I definitely want to read that. I could happily accept Silver and Verlis as distinct entities so long as Silver's love and devotion to Jane remains intact. I just hope I don't have to wait another twenty-four years to find out.
